Transforming an outdoor space into a charming oasis involves careful planning, creativity, and a blend of different elements to create a magical atmosphere....and sometimes even time! I've slowly been working on my outdoor space for years. Every year I add and change things to make it just that much cozier and welcoming. Today, I'm sharing my updated patio "living room" along with some tips on how to create your own enchanting and cozy outdoor oasis.

Here's a step-by-step process to guide you through the transformation:

1. Clear and Clean the Space: Begin by clearing the outdoor area of any clutter, debris, or unwanted items. Clean the space thoroughly to create a fresh canvas for your outdoor living space. This is a must, especially when spring rolls around. Get rid of all the unwanted stuff winter brought in. This year for me was a dead pheasant a raccoon brought under my patio table! It was an awful surprise.

2. Define Your Vision and What You Want: Decide on the style and theme you want for your outdoor living space. Whether it's a cozy cottage garden, a modern zen retreat, or a vibrant tropical paradise, having a clear vision will guide your choices throughout the process.

My vision for this space was a cozy cottage garden and true outdoor living with muted tones.
3. Outdoor Seating: Choose comfortable and stylish outdoor seating that complements your chosen theme. Consider options like cozy lounge chairs, a dining table with chairs, or even hammocks and swing chairs. Cushions and pillows in weather-resistant fabrics can add both comfort and charm.

I bought this patio set when we first moved into my house nearly 14 years ago! Can you believe it? It has lasted that long. It has gone from being brown, to blue, to beige, and now to white. I must say, that out of any patio furniture I have had, wood furniture tends to last the longest as long as it is kept up....screws tightened, outdoor paint is applied, etc.

These cushions are weather resistant and stain resistant from Target about 5 or so years ago and are holding up well! I keep this set uncovered during the winter as well, so it takes a beating!

An updated to this set this year was the white paint. It is Swiss Coffee by Behr. I chose an outdoor paint to help seal the wood and hoping this paint will last a little longer than the others.

4. Plants and Greenery: Plants are essential to create a lush and inviting oasis. Incorporate a variety of plants, including:
  • Trees and Shrubs: These provide structure and shade. Choose varieties that suit your climate and space size...I have mine added throughout the yard. This even includes those "weed" sunflowers!
  • Flower Beds: Plant flowers in vibrant colors that match your theme. Consider perennials for lasting beauty.
  • Container Plants: Use decorative pots and planters to add height and visual interest. Mix flowers, ornamental grasses, and trailing vines.
  • Climbing Plants: Install trellises or pergolas for climbing plants like ivy, wisteria, or climbing roses to create a sense of enchantment.
For the patio itself, I have included many potted plants. I like height, but love trailing ones. I don't have a green thumb, so the fact that these are still like this in August is crazy :)

5. Lighting: Outdoor lighting adds a magical touch to your space, especially in the evenings. Consider the following options:

  • String Lights: Hang string lights overhead to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Favorite ones linked here
  • Path Lights: Illuminate pathways with solar-powered or low-voltage path lights.
  • Candles and Lanterns: Place candles, lanterns, or LED candles on tables and surfaces for a cozy glow.
  • Fairy Lights: Wrap fairy lights around trees, shrubs, or pergolas for a whimsical effect.
I added Edison bulb string lights along my privacy screen. On the back fence I have also included another set of string lights. And on the other side of this space I shared in my last post, there are fair lights along the privacy fence. Adding solar powered lanterns is a must! It has replaced my candles....although, every now and then the time comes to bring them out!

6. Decor and Accents: Thoughtful decorations can elevate the charm of your outdoor space and make it a true "living space" :

  • Outdoor Rugs: Define seating areas with outdoor rugs that match your them
  • Outdoor Blankets and Pillows: Just like layering your couch inside, layer your furniture outside as well!

7. Furniture and Structures: Additional structures can enhance the magical feel of your oasis:
  • Pergola or Arbor: Install a pergola or arbor draped with climbing plants for an enchanting entrance.
  • Gazebo: Create a focal point with a gazebo where you can relax or dine.
  • Outdoor Curtains: Hang lightweight outdoor curtains for a touch of elegance and privacy. You can find the tutorial for how I made mine here: (link)
  • Unique Pieces: Include unique pieces to make the space truly yours! I used half a wine barrel as my coffee table. I brought out a bar stool for a plant stand and am using a cut tree stump for a side table. Think outside the box when it comes to pieces outdoors. Make it fun!

8. Personal Touches: Infuse your personality into the space with unique touches:
  • Cushions and Throws: Use cushions and throws in vibrant colors or patterns to add comfort and style. Or use subdued pieces so the life around the space takes center stage.
  • Outdoor Art: Hang your own artwork or craft pieces to make the space uniquely yours.
  • Books and Magazines: Create a cozy reading nook with a small bookshelf or magazine rack. Yes! You can bring books outdoors! I just watch the weather and take in any indoor items when needed.

9. Maintenance and Care: Regular maintenance is crucial to keeping your outdoor living space looking its best. Water and prune plants, clean furniture, and replace any worn-out or damaged items as needed. This is a serious thing. You should see how many pillows I threw away this year that didn't make it through the winter. When you place things outside, you need to remember that they definitely won't last as long. That being said, you may be surprised at how long some do last!

10. Enjoy and Evolve: Once your charming outdoor patio living space is complete, take the time to relax and enjoy the magical atmosphere you've created. Over time, consider adding or changing elements to keep the space fresh and inspiring. I do this every year....this space is ever evolving!

Remember, the key to transforming an outdoor space into a charming oasis is to harmoniously blend nature, design, and personal touches to create a place where you can unwind, connect with nature, and experience a touch of magic....and most importantly, relax!
