How to paint a dresser, and add a little cute pattern on the drawers! #decoartprojects #madewithmichaels

You all know how much I love updating a piece of furniture. Well, guess what? This sweet little piece has sat like this in my possession for over 9 years. I know. Shame on me :) Well, it sat in my closet for 8 of those years and found it's way into the basement. So, really, out of site out of mind. But, I finally need it again, so I decided it needed a little update and get itself out of the 90s. Here's the before:

To finish this dresser, I used:
DecoArt's Americana Decor in Satin Enamels (2 Pure White, 1 Smoke Grey, 1 Honey Gold)
Americana Decor Mod Quatrefoil Stencil
Paint supplies (roller, paint brushes, tape)
Spray Paint

Step 1: I pulled off all the hardware and pulled out all the drawers.

Step 2: Lightly sand the drawers and chest.

Step 3: I then took the Pure White and rolled it onto the drawers and the main chest piece itself.

To do this, I simply poured the tubs of paint into a plastic paint holder and used the roller to pick it up. Just like painting a wall :)

Step 4: After the first coat was dried, I used two additional coats of paint for optimal coverage.

Step 5: For the sides of the drawer, I used the painters tape, and taped off the overhanging edges.

Step 6: I then used the Smoke Grey to paint the sides of the drawers. I just used a foam brush for this; you can use a roller too. I only had to do one coat for this to cover perfectly.

Step 7: After the Smoke Grey was dried, I taped the stencil onto the drawer. I applied a light amount of Honey Gold onto a foam brush, dabbing off the extra onto a paper plate. I then slightly pressed it on the stencil to get the desired look I was going for.

Step 8: Instead of spending a ton of extra money on new handles, I decided to just spray paint my existing ones oil rubbed bronze.

And here's the after! This piece finally matches all the other pieces in the set. I wish I had done this forever ago and enjoyed it that much longer!

I just love the little peek of pattern and color you get when the drawers are open. And let's be real, my drawers are often overflowing and opened :) So, I get to enjoy this little peek probably more often that I should.

Now this chest of drawers is too pretty to hide! It will probably make it's way to my little girl's bedroom since I can't stand the thought of putting it back into the basement :)

As for the paint I used? It's perfect to use on furniture and much more durable than traditional paints that I have used in the past. It's a satin enamel, so you get the hard surface without the gloss, which is perfect for furniture! Plus, Americana Decor offers a slew of other products, like chalky finishes and metallics! You can find out more information about the paints at American Decor.

You can also find the paints at your local Michaels Store in the stains and finishes aisle! So, go check them out!

  1. I really love this new look. I have my mother's art deco dresser and vanity which are screaming for paint - this would be the perfect way to easily get that done. Thanks for sharing.
