DIY Hanging Storage Baskets

DIY Hanging Storage Baskets -all you need are baskets and some rope!

I can't believe October is already upon us! And you all know what that means . . . Walking Dead is coming back!! :) Kind of excited about that...I just hope that it's better than last season, or maybe I should say, I hope things actually happen in the episodes this time around. I'm sick of watching a whole episode and having nothing happen in it. Anyway :) ...if you are a Walking Dead fan, you totally know what I mean..

So, now that the little babe is practically walking around everywhere, pulling herself up on anything and everything...and now that she's actually using her nursery :)... I had to take out the cute little lamp in the corner. I had crazy fears of it falling over on her, so out it went...and in came a wonderful blank corner.

I wanted some storage in there, but was once again worried about a little corner shelf that she could possible pull down on herself. So, I started thinking and realized that the solution was something that couldn't rest on the ground....well, and it had to be cute, and of course a little whimsical and unique.

I found these baskets at Gordmans. I love them. The chicken wire and linen are perfect together. And on that note....just an fyi for all you basket buyers out there, Gordmans has a super awesome selection of baskets for decent prices. I used to go to Ross, but recently every time I go to Ross and can't find what I'm looking for, I can always find it at Gordmans. So if you are lucky enough to have a Gordmans in your area you are set :).... that is if you aren't lucky enough to have a Home Goods close by. Home Goods has scores and scores of awesome baskets and storage totes...I'm one of those unlucky ones in that case :(

So on to the project...since these baskets are hanging storage suspended from the ceiling it solves two problems: 1. It's not on the ground and can't fall on her. 2. It's high enough that she can't pull herself up onto it. Problem solved.

To get these to hang, I used some cotton line. I cut 4 pieces each at the same length.

I then marked each piece where I wanted to have it knotted on each basket. So, three baskets, three knots, three equadistant marks.

For the bottom basket, I knotted the line on the handle. The the second basket, found my mark, and knotted it on the handle...and the same for the third basket.

I repeated this process with each piece of line. To end it off, I just tied the four pieces in a knot and hung it on the ceiling.

Of course this isn't the kind of storage for heavy stuff, but perfect for small toys, blankets and hair bows.

And while we are talking about the little one...well at least her nursery...I need some advice. I don't know what else to do and I have tried everything. She will not take naps. Flat out refuses to take naps! She has never been one to take naps even since she was a newborn but I know that she needs them. I have been putting her down to take them and pretty much just letting her cry it out. She'll cry for hours if I let her. I usually let her go about 30 minutes before I go in. Oh, and if she does end up falling asleep, it's like for 20 minutes...tops. This mama can't get anything done anymore :( Any advice on how to get a baby to fall asleep? ...I'm really tired of hearing her scream bloody murder every time she goes down for one. (p.s. I have been blessed that she sleeps through the night..mostly). Thanks in advance :)

  3. The baskets were the perfect idea. It turns out I have a thing for metal baskets and these look so beautiful in the room. We have a 10 month old and definitely need to get on some more extensive baby proofing ourselves. As far as naps, I have no advice but hopefully someone else will. Good luck - I know naptime is important for both happy babies and happy mommas.

  4. With our first baby I had to get him to sleep while laying on me until he was well over 1, then lay him down on the couch. He just would not nap in his crib. When he got a little older, around 18 mo-2 yr, I had him watch a movie and he would make it just 10 minutes or so and fall asleep right there on the couch. I don't know what it was about his crib but he just always napped better on the couch in the living room with me. Good luck!!!

  5. About naps, when my daughter was little we did the eat play sleep routine to get her on a schedule. And now that she's older (3 1/2) I've been putting her in the pack n play so she won't be tempted to get out of bed and play. It sounds like your baby is between these stages. So a few questions. Is she cranky for the rest of the day without a nap? Could she go to bed earlier on the days when she didn't nap so you could get your free time in? Could she play in her room by herself during nap time so you can have a break? Could she play in a pack n play with toys in her room during nap time? It's hard because you can't force a person to sleep. I've been going through this with my 3 1/2 year old. I could tolerate it if it weren't for the crankiness. I'm sorry that nap time hasn't been happening for you. It's so precious!

  6. I thought I knew what I was doing with my third child this year....but he surprised me and taught me so much more! I had months of 20-minute naps...days where he would sleep for just 40 minutes. I was on the brink of PND from exhaustion and sleep deprivation.

About 6-7 weeks ago, when he was about 10.5mths old, I put my foot down and started our reading routine at night. I read the same book and finish on the same poem every night and he knows to lay down at that last poem. I now recite the poem as I put him to bed during the day...and he sleeps up to 3 hours at 1yo. I also put him in his sleeping bag, which he knows is for sleeping only.

The trick is to find something and stick to it until she's older. If you have a library baby reading session that you can go to once or twice a week, do it and then put her down for a nap. Or coffee mornings, set play times etc. Persistence is the key !

  7. Love the hanging basket idea!

Re: naps- Checkout The Sleep Lady on facebook and buy her book Good Night Sleep Tight. It has been a lifesaver for us! Lots of great methods, tips and info on sleep for 6mo.-5 years. We like her method- no crying it out and we feel like we've established a great sleep foundation! We still refer to it at every stage for updates, etc. He is two and we are soooo glad we did this! Good luck!

  9. My first baby was just like yours! He did NOT want to take naps in the crib. It would be 15-20 min tops and I was ripping my hair out. So I changed my tactics. I would just sit him in something safe or playpen him and let him play... well until he wanted to be entertained. It's the only way I could get anything done, even though in spurts. Since he was my first baby I thought this was normal and all the books I read talking about babies sleeping most of the time were fairy tales. It seemed to help if he was in the same room with him and talked to him. We had a Hula-coop that he could safely sit in and bounce and play with things. It was a long struggle with him demanding so much attention and refusing to nap unless he dropped off in the Hula-coop. Then my second son was born and he slept all the time! Fairy tales DO come true!! Best wishes for your situation. I hope someone has a good solution for you.

    Blessings, Edie Marie
