The following Elf On The Shelf ideas are from last year. I think I only missed one...and that's probably because he just got stuck in a vase or something. One of those nights where I had no desire to think up anything on the spot.
Since I am pro now at easy last minute elf on the shelf ideas, I'm sharing them all with you! You can follow the following pictures by day and use them yourself. A few times, I just grab things I already bought for the kids for something else, and do a make-shift poem to go along with it. My kids are also always losing teeth in December...so there are a few of those pictures as well where the elf on the shelf meets the tooth fairy.
Here are some tips I have learned over the past 8 or so years:
Supplies to have on hand:
- Ribbon/jute
- Toilet paper and rolls (I use these all the time in one way or another)
- Tape & scissors
- Random toys/gifts (dollar store ones work great, or grab from stocking stash)
- Doilies or paper for elf to write notes on
To make life easy, I usually just have the elf do something along the lines of what we were already doing that day. Like if we baked cookies, he would decorate some. If we made a craft, he would do his own. If we had hot chocolate, he would make something with marshmallows, etc.
Here are the easiest ideas, no pictures needed, for the serious last minute times:
- Hide in fridge bundled in dish towel
- Hide in TP roll
- Put in vase
- Hide in curtains or blinds
- Hide up high
- Hide in silverware drawer
- Hang from light
- Eating some snacks
- TP something...Christmas tree, room, chair, stairs, etc.

What to do for the Elf On The Shelf on December 24th:
He hangs up more lights all around the house to welcome santa.
"I added more lights for Santa to see...It's my last night - how can that be?"

- Open present, or peek in presents
- Blow up balloons are the house
- Write a pretty banner
- Elf gets into cake
- Elf decorates cake
What to do for Elf On The Shelf with the tooth fairy:
Tooth fairy will always catch the elf from stealing teeth.
- Catch the elf in a jar
- Tie up the elf with floss
- Smear toothpaste on elf's eyes so he can't see
- Hang from feet with floss
- Elf dresses up as tooth fiary
- Elf gets doused with glitter
