Do you remember a few years ago when bottle brush trees were all the rage—and somehow impossible to find anywhere? I clearly remember ordering a set from Amazon because they were sold out everywhere else, and they arrived so smooshed I had to fluff them for days. Thankfully, bottle brush Christmas trees are now easy to find in every size and style. But one thing hasn’t changed… the bases are still pretty basic, usually just plain round wood disks. And if you love DIY Christmas decor as much as I do, you know those little details make all the difference. So I started digging through items I already had at home to come up with creative bottle brush tree base ideas, budget-friendly DIY upgrades, and simple Christmas decor hacks that instantly make store-bought trees feel custom.
Before we dive into all the everyday-item stand ideas, I have to show you how one thrift store lamp DIY turned into four different bottle brush tree stands—perfect for holiday vignettes, greenery, and cozy Christmas decorating throughout the house.
I bought this lamp for $8 at the thrift store. It was more than I wanted to spend, but when I realized how many pieces I could get out of it, I was sold. The first step was to take out the middle rod and separate the pieces. For this particular lamp, I had to unscrew a bolt at the bottom to loosen it all up.
I then cut the wire. I was hoping to save it for some other projects, but this was the only way I could get the pieces off.
I then just slipped the pieces down off the rod.
It came out in 4 pieces, 3 of which will match my decor. The stone part would work great for a tree, just not my style.
I simply added some floral styrofoam into the holes, took the wood discs off the trees, and then stuck the wire from the trees into the holes.
I played around a bit with what to add to this big one. The bottle brush tree was cute, but I wanted something a little bigger. I think I like the green tree. I'll also be playing around with this set during other times of the year.
I’ve been slowly picking up silver dining pieces over the years—not because I’m trying to build a collection, but because they’re just so pretty. I love using them as decorative vessels around the house, especially for DIY Christmas decor and candles. They worked perfectly for this display! And the best part? You don’t even need to remove the original base from the bottle brush trees—just tuck one right into a silver creamer and call it done.

Okay, now for some more ideas! These ones don't require much disassembling. I shopped my house and found some amazing items that would work great for the DIY bottle brush tree stands.
These two pieces were old lamp and light parts, I believe one came from a brass riser. I got these two from a vintage store and knew they would look so cute with bottle brush trees in them.
Some more silver pieces that would make cute stands are salt and pepper shakers. Just take the lids off and store them somewhere, use the other piece as a cute stand!
Now for these next ideas—most people probably have at least one of these tucked away at home. If not… why do they feel impossible to find anymore? Seriously, why is it so hard to come across brass candlesticks these days? Is it just my area, or are you having the same problem too?
This idea uses candlesticks or candelabras, and here’s the fun part: most of them actually come apart. All you have to do is unscrew them. You can create the cutest bottle brush tree bases using either the cup portion or the base of the candlestick, making this an easy DIY Christmas decor hack with pieces you might already own.
These bases below are all from candlesticks that have been disassembled. If the trees lean or won't go in, just add some floral foam to the hole.
You can easily punch the wire through the middle of a dried orange, and then stack it on top of other dried pieces or grapefruit to create a fun unique bottle brush tree stand. I also found this cute vintage thread spool. Just place a tree in there!
These cute little pieces are ironstone insulators. They had a hole, so I knew they would work well!
Do you have any other fun ideas you have used in the past? I've heard of people doing spindles and doorknobs! The possibilities are truly endless.
