DIY Painted Shiplap Picture Frame

I was provided product by DecoArt and compensated to write about this project, but all thoughts, opinions, and ideas are my own :)

If you all follow me on social media, you know that I lost my sweet dog of 12 years in March. I had a long list of things I wanted to do to commemorate his memory for both me and my family...but, let's be honest...mainly me :) One of them was getting pictures printed for my children so they can have it in their rooms. I had the pictures printed, but needed some sort of way to display them. And here's what I did.

Bonus, if you don't want to turn this into a picture holder, you can easily paint a quote in it's place to make a cute wood sign!

Supplies needed:
6 -1x3 pine boards cut at 12" each
2 -1x2 boards cut at 12" each
DecoArt Americana Premium Acrylics and Mediums (colors listed below)
Paint brushes

Step 1: Cut your boards to length if you haven't already. I chose this size since the picture I am framing is a 5x7 and this gave enough border to paint on. If you are choosing a larger picture, you'll want to adjust your size.

Step 2: Nail or wood glue, or both, your 1x2s onto the back of the 1x3 board. Make sure you boards are even and all lined up.

Step 3: Hang a d-ring onto the middle of the back if you are wanting to hang this on the wall. If you want it to stand up, then I would move the 1x2s above to be flush with the bottom of the 1x3s to get it more stability.

Here are the colors I used from the DecoArt Premium Acrylics line:
Titanium White, Quinacridone Magenta, Green Gold, Carbon Black, Vermillion Hue, Cadmium Orange Hue, Prussian Blue Hue, and Yellow Oxide.

I also used the texture medium and gloss medium.

Step 4: Using the Titanium White, paint the wood surface. You may wish the sand the wood beforehand if the wood is overly textured or splintered.

Step 5: Using a medium round brush, take the Quinacridone Magenta and make circles. Start from the middle and work outward. Keep the thicker paint around the swirls there to give the illusion of petals. To get a lighter flower, mix the magenta with the Titanium White.

Step 6: Mix equal parts of Green Gold and Texture medium to create the leaves. I used a small round brush for this. This is essentially two lines folding down upon each other to get this look.

Step 7: Add a little of Carbon Black to your paint mixture above from the leaves. The amount you put depends on how much paint you used. Just start small and add from there to get a darker green. I then used a small rigger brush to make the lines by the flowers.

Step 8: Using Vermillion Hue and the tip of the rigger brush, create little dots on top of the lines.

Step 9: Create the same type of dots around the flowers and leaves with Cadmium Orange Hue and Prussian Blue Hue.

Step 10: Now it's time to add the pollen into the middle of the flowers using a small rigger brush and the Yellow Oxide.

Step 11: Once everything was dried, I went over the flowers with the gloss medium to give it a beautiful shine. I went in non overlapping circles so to not cover the entire flower.

This is the point where you could easily use calligraphy and paint on a cute quote. But, I'm not so awesome with things like that :)

Step 12: Screw in a clip to the middle.

This actually stands pretty well by itself, but if you have a toddler running around, it'll get bumped over. So, I decided to play around with where I wanted it.

And I found this corner and fell in love with how it just popped!

Here's a close up look at how the painting turned out. I just love the dark swirls in the flowers.

I didn't plan it this way, but the magenta on the flowers matches almost perfectly the color of the flowers on the wall. I made this corner of flowers a year ago in attempt to add color into the nursery. The nursery was just white and brown and creams, so it needed a little pop. I feel like hanging this picture in the corner just finished it off perfectly :)
