I'm sharing a new space with you today, and it's new because it's not in my house! :) I've shared several projects I've worked on over the years at my mom's house, and today I'm sharing another area of her home—and showing you how to style and decorate a hutch.
A few months ago, she moved my great-grandpa's old player piano out to have it restored, leaving behind a huge empty space. A friend gave her this beautiful vintage hutch, and it was the perfect piece to fill it.
Her first attempt at decorating the hutch was...okay. You can see how she had it styled below.
As you can see, the hutch was rather dark, and a lot of the decor was blending together. The rest of her home is super bright, so the dark hutch and decor really stuck out like a sore thumb.
I gave her a few tips for brightening up the hutch and some pictures to use as inspiration. She ended up with this look, which was definitely a step in the right direction!
But she was still wanting some help to make the hutch feel more finished and “right.” So I decided to use it as an opportunity to completely overhaul the space, and share some of the decorating tips I use to style a hutch, bookshelf, shelf, or vignette.
These are the same decorating principles I use throughout my own home, and they can be used with the pieces you already have to create a space that feels layered, balanced, collected, and cohesive
The first tip:
Start with a blank slate. Take everything off, and put to the side. You can bring them back later...or maybe not all.
Tip 2:
Shop your home. I went around her house and grabbed some things that would look good in here. She also has been collecting some fun white pieces already, so that definitely helped!
Tip 3:
Think layers! Layers come in many different forms...depth, height...stacks of dishes, books, peaks of greenery, etc.
And that's just the beginning! In the video, I walk through more than 25 decorating tips and styling decisions, including the little things I look for when a shelf or vignette just doesn't feel quite right.
You can see more close-ups and styling of this beautiful hutch below:
I hope this video gave you at least one new idea for styling a hutch, bookshelf, shelf, or vignette in your home! I’d love to know, which decorating tip was your favorite, or which one are you excited to try? Let me know in the comments!
