Let’s start with a little story. I go into Hobby Lobby a lot...between crafting, running this blog, and homeschooling, it’s basically a second home at this point. And every single time I walked past this one section, these placemats stopped me in my tracks. I finally grabbed a couple, knowing full well I wasn’t going to use them as placemats. All I could see was pillows. They were the perfect size for a lumbar pillow, and since they’re double-sided, they can be styled so many different ways throughout the year. Best part? This is a 5-minute DIY. Let me show you exactly how to make it.
Supplies Needed:
Placemats (double sided, or make sure they have two pieces of fabric sewn together)
Seam Ripper
Polyfill/stuffing
Pins
Sewing Machine/needle and thread
Step 1:
Using the seam ripper, open a hole about 5 inches wide on one of the sides.
Step 2:
Fill the inside with polyfill, making sure to get it into all the corners. Overstuffing at this point is a bonus, but may make sewing it a little harder.
Step 3:
Pin the sides back together and into place, following the same seam you just ripped apart
Step 4:
Sew along that line with the sewing machine or needle/thread. Make sure you go back and forth at the beginning and end.
And you're done! Now it's time to go and decorate with it.
And that’s it. Seriously. One placemat, a few minutes, and suddenly you have a pillow that looks custom. This is one of those little DIYs that makes decorating feel fun again...easy, low-pressure, and budget-friendly. Style it on a bed, a bench, or a chair, flip it seasonally, or make a few in different textures. Once you make one, you’ll start looking at placemats very differently. If you try this DIY, I’d love to see it...tag me or leave a comment and tell me where you styled yours.
