There’s something about decorating the dining room for Christmas that just fills my heart. Maybe it’s the glow of candlelight on winter evenings, or maybe it’s knowing this is the spot where we gather for slow breakfasts, late-night cocoa, and everything in between. Either way, each year I try to make this room feel extra cozy and inviting—not just for Christmas Day, but for the entire season. And honestly? It’s easier than you think when you focus on simple layers, warmth, and texture.
Today I’m sharing how I pulled together this year’s dining room, along with some easy tips you can use to make your own space feel festive and lived-in—all season long.

Start With a Foundation of Layers + Texture
Layering is my go-to decorating trick, especially during the winter months. This room comes alive simply by piling on textures:
- A chunky knit throw draped over the bench adds instant warmth.
- A faux-fur throw layered at the end of the seating softens the space and makes guests want to snuggle right in.
- Pillows at the head chairs add extra comfort and bring in subtle Christmas patterning without overwhelming the space.
Texture is your best friend when you want a room to feel lived-in, soft, and inviting.
Keep the Hutch Neutral So the Table Can Shine
I like to keep my hutch styled lightly festive but mostly neutral—think cream pottery, ironstone, simple bowls, and tiny pops of greenery. This lets the dining table be the star of the show without visual competition.
A few sprigs of greens tucked around the dishes and a little ribbon here and there are all you need to keep it seasonal.
Create a Christmas Tablescape That Lasts All Season
The star of this room is definitely the dining table. I wanted something that felt full and lush, but also simple enough to leave out for everyday living.
The Centerpiece
I used a cement-glazed pot filled with winter greens and pinecones as the anchor. It feels rustic and cottagey but still clean and fresh. From there, I added brass candlesticks that cascade down the center of the table, weaving faux cedar garland and eucalyptus stems in between. The mixture of metals, greens, and textures brings in warmth without feeling cluttered.
The Place Settings
Each setting is a mix of new and vintage plates—one of my favorite ways to make a table feel personal. I topped them with vintage bowls and tucked in a gold mercury glass ornament tied with a velvet red bow. It’s festive, simple, and surprisingly easy.
It's okay to switch things up if you don't have enough! I used green ribbon on the head place settings instead of red.
And here’s a little trick I love:
I opened up one seat and swapped the place setting with a basket tray holding a teacup and a sweet little setup for coffee or cocoa. It breaks up the table visually and subtly invites people to slow down and linger.
Bring Christmas to Unexpected Corners
Even the small pieces in the room get dressed up for the season.
Pie Safe Charm
The pie safe in the corner got a few sprigs of greenery placed in vases and a small wreath on the door. It’s subtle, but it ties the entire room together without feeling overdone.
A Mini Tree in a Basket
One of my favorite touches this year is the Christmas tree top tucked into a woven basket and placed at the end of the table. This is a great way to use something that's broken, and not throw it away. Adding a this tree instantly makes a space feel magical, and placing it in a basket gives it that cozy cottage charm. A simple velvet bow finishes it off perfectly.
Soft Seating Makes the Room Feel Linger-Worthy
I always want our dining room to feel like a place people actually want to sit—not just a place to eat and leave. Adding comfort is key:
- Layered throws
- Soft seat cushions
- Cozy knit blankets
- Pillows with festive patterns
These small touches make a huge difference in how the room feels.
Cozy Is Always Better
At the end of the day, Christmas decorating doesn’t have to be overcomplicated. Focus on warmth, layers, texture, and a few thoughtful festive touches, and your dining room will feel like the heart of your home all season long.
Whether you're hosting a big family dinner or sipping tea by candlelight, a cozy Christmas dining room invites you to slow down and soak up the season.
