Día de Muertos Skull Painting

I was provided product by DecoArt and compensated to write about this project, but all thoughts, opinions, and ideas are my own :)

Quick craft ideas for Halloween and Día de Muertos!

So, I have to be very candid right here for a moment. I am no painter. I never have been although I did make a stellar Marilyn Monro stamp portrait once in college. But, really besides that my art skills are below a zero...that goes along with my arts and crafts skills too. :) But, when I see something I like, sometimes I try to imitate it. That goes the same with this painting.  I had stumbled upon a cute little painting a few months back and wanted to make something similar for Halloween or for Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Well, months later, it finally happened. Didn't turn out anything like the original, but I don't mind this version either ;)

To make this, here's the supply list I used:
DecoArt Neon Lights paint (Pink Explosion, Knockout Blue, Radiant Yellow, Peach Punch, Green Energy) ..and black paint for highlighting
Paint brushes
Canvas
Felt cut out skull (from Michaels)
Glue gun

The first thing I did was put the skull down on the canvas, right in the middle and kind of eyed where I wanted the middle section to be, which is where I painted the main section of leaves. Then I started outward from there with flowers.

I used a couple different types of flowers, and put them kind of where ever, with no rhyme or reason. Just trying to make it look full.

At the end, I decided it needed a little contrast, so I add some black lines through the stems and leaves and highlighting the the centers of the flowers.

Next was adding the skull. I just hot glued this right over the painting.

This skull did come with a red flower, but I switched it for a yellow one since it matched the awesome colors of the Neon Lights better. I can't wait for Halloween and Día de Muertos; I'm going to light this up with a black light...apparently the paint is supposed to look pretty cool! :)

Now to get started on all my other Halloween decor :) I'm thinking I might wait a few more weeks to put it out. I'm not all about the celebrating it for a whole month thing. But, it is super fun! So, we'll see :)

  1. That is such a beautiful and not at all scarry skull painting. Neon colors are looking vibrant. I would love to have this painting.
