DIY Oversized Wood Dice

DIY oversized wood dice. A great way to add rustic farmhouse charm to your house!
We went to the Parade of Homes the other day, and I saw these in one of the houses and fell in love! They actually left the price tag on too...odd, yes. But, it was nice because I saw that they cost a whopping $9 per die! Serious. Someone is making a grundle haha.  Since I loved them so much, I decided to make some. I just used a 8 foot 4x4 that I got for $9. You can make like 27 of these for the cost of one in the store. Anyway, I then cut 6 cubes out of the post. They were 3.5 inches each.

I then made a template and printed it out, a number 1-6 for each side. I put each number on a side of the block, and used a little flat head screw driver to make a indent.

Having the indent was helpful rather than a mark because it helped guide the drill in the next step.

I then used a 1/2 inch drill bit and drilled about a quarter of an inch into each indent.

Once all the holes were drilled, I then sanded all the sides and holes with a sander.

The way I saw these at the house was bare like this. But, I really liked the idea of having some stain on them.

I was planning on doing all six of the dice white, but then I thought they would look awesome stained with Dark Walnut. And they did! And truthfully...I don't know what I was thinking wanting to have 6 all the same color.

For the white ones, I used the Color Stain in Picket Fence by DecoArt. And for the wholes, I decided to brush in a little Dark Walnut by Minwax. The dark stain mixed with the white and turned out pretty cool :)

I've been going around the house playing around with where I want them. I'm so glad that I made these though! I was really in a stump of decorating with the same ol' things...clocks, lanterns, and faux plants lol. This at least gives a little more character :)

And I love how they look so old! The girl at Home Depot was like, "are you sure you want this post? There's a huge crack in it." Of course I do! The more cracks the better haha. This gave it so much character.

Truthfully though, even though I initially wanted them all to be white, the brown are my favorite!

  2. I am amazed at the makeover of your living room! I really want to use white, but the window wall reads dark. Been trying for months to choose the right white or a neutral color to go with chrome, silver, rhinestone, crystal accessories, etc. A lot of people say that light colors will not work, but I am ready to come out of the dark! Let's hope I make the right choice. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hint! Each opposite sides usually add up to seven, i.e. 6-1,5-2,4-3. Nice job!
