Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July! For once, ours was really low key. Lounged around the house for a little bit. Did a few projects, like this gallery wall, ate some wonderfully awesome caprese burgers and did a little fireworks...and fire...viewing at a local park. Side note: The caprese burger...so simple, you have to try it. Make your burger/turkey burger like normal. Add some mozzarella cheese to one side and melt it at the end of the grilling process. Get some basil pesto and smear it on, then top it off with a tomato. Super yummy. Oh, and toast your bun with some butter for some extra yumminess :) You'll thank me later.
So, about this gallery wall. As I have said before, I eventually want to do board and batten in my entryway hall. But lately, I've been wondering if I really want to do that or not. I know it will bring in the character I want, but then again, there's something in my far distant thoughts saying hold off. So I have. :) lol, which is amazing cuz usually I don't ever listen to those far distant thoughts ;)
I attempted to break up the huge empty wall with some picture frames back in February (pictured above). It worked for the time being, but lacked any sort of umph. I guess it was better than a blank wall though right? :)
This wall is just so big and empty and needed something on it desperately....and not just a couple of small picture frames.
So I figure, why not do a gallery wall? I wasn't sure how this would look or if I would like it, so instead of putting a gazillion holes in the wall, I put up some paper instead to see the layout, the spacing, the height...etc.
Loved it.
Then I got to thinking....a whole bunch of frames would be fun, but what if I put my subway art piece in there? My main concern was that the subway art would hang too low. So to get an eye for it, I cut out some paper the size of the art and taped it up there.
Then I still wasn't so sure. Cuz you never really know until you see it. So when I started to hang the frames, I hung them all on the outside perimeter and then had the hubs hold up the subway art in the middle for me to get a good eye for it :)
...and of course, I loved it. It wasn't too low at all. Now my big blank wall is no longer blank :) Oh, and just a side note...if you plan on doing a gallery wall...make sure you hammer in all the nails first, then put up the frames...cuz if you don't...you may or may not have a few frames crashing down on your head in middle of you hammering :) and you may or may not end up with a minor cut and a huge bruise.....not that I'm saying from experience or anything.....
As for the frames, I got them from Ikea for $2 each. Not too bad. They hold a 5x7 and slightly smaller than a 4x6.
The pictures were some candids and then some shots that the hub's dad took of us...which I finally got :) finally. lol. That was the main thing pushing me to do this wall. I decided to tie in the pictures with the color of the subway art and keep them all in sepia tone.
I also decided to change the corner of my entryway up a little bit. I loved the table that was there, but every time Max would run to the door, his tail would whip it and hit it like crazy. I had to be careful in what vases I put up there, cuz they have been knocked down on more than one occasion. Especially it would get kinda crazy when we would throw the ball down the hall for him. Usually he was carefully...sometimes, not so much :)
I figure the best thing for my sanity and anxiety is to just move it to the other side. Then the next question was, what to put there instead?
I have had this vision in my head for sometime now about putting up a curtain along the door way. So much so, that back in February when I 'redid' the entryway, I even used a tension rod and threw a curtain on it and had it hang there for awhile to see how Max did with it....ya' know, ball getting caught in the curtain....all comes crashing down..etc etc. Well, it wasn't too bad, but the hubs hated it. But to my defense, it was on the left side of the doorway, so it did get in the way.
Now with the table moved, I knew I had to try it one more time. Kind of a last ditch effort, but hang it on the right side instead.
But, I wanted to see the whole shebang, not just a tension rod, but I didn't want to make it permanent just yet, so I used 3M command hooks and laid the rod on top. Voila! Instant, non-permanent gratification :)
I fell in love with it.
And the hubs didn't mind it either :) which is saying a lot. Cuz when I had it up the other way, he said.."You know Alicia, you come up with some ideas that I think are crazy, but end up turning out great. This is not one of them. You cannot put that up. Just can't." lol. I'm paraphrasing of course. But you get the point.
To tie the curtain to the side, I just used some old jute I had lying around. When you look at it, it may appear to be a robe and belt from the Old Testament but I assure you it's not :) lol
I love how much more welcoming the entryway is now. Plus. Now I have a ton of pictures of us up. Thats another thing the hubs always got onto me about. "you don't have any pictures of us in the house...yadda yadda yadda." Anyway. Now he can shut it :) lol I can count at least 14 on this wall along :)
