Headboard upgrade...for cheap!

DIY Headboard

I loved my bedroom before but it just always felt like something was missing....maybe color on the walls? Well, I'm not quite ready to take that big step, so as you can see below, I figured I would add my own color via a sheet draped over my headboard.

It worked for a little bit, until I got tired of the dang thing always moving. So, I made my own headboard sans moving the sheet :)

Supplies needed:
  • plywood cut to size (they cut it at the homedepot for you),
  • 2x4s cut in half,
  • brown sheet or fabric of your liking,
  • batting,
  • pretty decorative buttons,
  • staple gun,
  • hot glue gun,
  • drill,
  • screws,
  • tape measure and so on...
I didn't want to spend a whole lot of moola on batting, which can be quite pricey, so I just folded the amount I had in half and stapled it in the center of the plywood. Click here to see what this headboard looks like with a lot more batting.

I then wrapped my $4 sheet (yes, it was cheaper than fabric and much wider) around the board and stapled it on the back side making sure the corners were crisp and it pulled tightly.
I just had to have the tufted look, but I wasn't going to spend the time and energy creating it for real....so, instead. I just got the good ol' staple gun out, measured the distances, and stapled down three times on two rows along the batting region.

I then used the hot glue gun and glued on some bling :)

Here's how I got it to stand up (this should be done before all the rest of the stuff goes on, of course). I made sure the 2x4s were at an equal height along the plywood and screwed them in with the drill in two places on each 2x4. =Not pretty. But they hide behind the bed anyway, so who really cares?
Here's the finished product:

And here's my new and improved room :)

Total cost of headboard? $16! By the far the cheapest and easiest way on how to make a headboard :)

UPDATE::::
I've made two more headboards since then using this awesome tutorial :)
A new, bigger one for my master bedroom (click here or on picture to see post)

And another one for a guest room (click here on on picture to see post)

  3. WOW awesome job! I love that you just hot glued the buttons on and used a sheet. I tend to use sheets a lot from Ikea since they are sooooo much cheaper than fabric. I want to make one for my bed now!

  6. So clever! Would you mind telling me how you did the fastened-buckled part of the ribbon in the photo on the home page? So classy!

  7. I absolutely LOVE this project! I would also like to know how you did the fastened-buckled part of the ribbon on this headboard. Thanks so much for the tip on easy tufting!

  8. I built this today with your instructions! It looks great, though I used thicker batting doubled up and it still didn't really look very plush. Not sure what I could have done differently, but it brings so much more presence to my room now!

  11. I just ran across this and fell in love with it! This is going to be my next project but my question is on the faux leather. The only measurement I can find in it is 54" width but the width of my bed is 58" so what do you recommend to do about the overage in the inches of the bed? I don't want a huge ugly seam running through it.

    1. Incorporate the seam into the design. Maybe have a seam on either side of the headboard. You could make a square in square type of design.

  16. I use screws for tufting - holds in place really well - my staples tend to fall out!

  17. Would you mind explaining and/or posting pics of the 2x4? What is the purpose of them? Are you using them to mount to the bed or the wall?

  18. Wow, this is AMAZING! Why pay over $200+ when you can do it yourself. THANK YOU so much for posting this. I'm hoping I can pull this off in my new room!! :)

  19. I've looked throught the posts of the progression of your bedroom.. Mine keeps changing too! I stare at it and figure out what I need next. I'm not good at doing it "all at once". It evolves. Love what yours has grown into now. My new love is fresh flowers. Cute thrift store vase (pot, pitcher, creamer, dish of any sort that strikes my fancy and costs a buck) and $3 worth of flowers from the grocery store completely changes my room. .I have the perfect clear glass round vase that needs to be on that cute little table at the end of your bed. I'm thinking hot pink flowers??? Ok, maybe I'll get up the nerve to try your headboard. Thanks for the inspiration.-Chris
